Franchise creator George R.R. Martin has opened up about the forthcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which he claims will be unlike any previous Game of Thrones series. Speaking with Collider to promote In the Lost Lands, the recently released fantasy movie based on his short story of the same name, Martin teased A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is based on his Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. "I've seen Dunk and Egg, the first season, and it's great," Martin praised, "and now they're working on the second season. Those are two characters were really special to me, and they're unusual, those characters. They're not what most people would expect in a fantasy story." The author also shared that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be "a little softer" than Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, as well as "a little more humorous. I hope the audience will be open to that kind of change." Announced in April 2023, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be the third installment in HBO's Game of Thrones franchise after the original series, which aired from 2011 to 2019, and the prequel series, House of the Dragon, whose third season is set to premiere in 2026. The spinoff series takes place roughly 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will follow two unlikely heroes who wandered Westeros — a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg, played by Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters) and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), respectively

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Will Be a Faithful Adaptation

Martin previously praised A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earlier this year, referring to the spinoff as "faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for." He also shared that the upcoming show would not be as action-heavy as Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, stating, "Viewers who are looking for action, and more action, and only action… well, this one may not satisfy you. There's a huge fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers. This is a character piece, and its focus is on duty and honor, on chivalry and all it means. I hope you will love the show as much as I do."

House of the Dragon Season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Seasons 1 and 2 are the only Game of Thrones spinoffs currently in production. While a Game of Thrones sequel series following Jon Snow was at one point in development, the character's actor, Kit Harington, revealed in April 2024 that the project had been shelved for the foreseeable future until they could come up with a worthy story. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is slated to premiere on HBO in 2025.
